Wood and Mountain Cabin: Finding Peace in the Heart of Nature

January 11, 2024

On a quiet piece of land in the mountains of Chiang Mai, Thailand, there is a log cabin designed by Sher Maker. Dubbed the Wood and Mountain Cabin, this building can be rented by anyone who wants to experience living in the middle of nowhere, away from localities.

This two-story wooden cabin is built with a steel structure wrapped in local wood. Because of the location in the mountains with a humid environment, Sher Maker first processes the material to be durable. Therefore, the boards are given a special touch with the Japanese Shou Sugi Ban method. This wood finishing technique burns the surface of the wood to make it stronger.

Wood and Mountain Cabin has a shape that is not so special because the design is limited to the shape of elongated beams. However, the amazing thing about this cabin is that all three sides of the building are completely covered by wooden boards. While one other open part is allocated as a terrace. In this way, residents can enjoy the stunning mountain scenery without disturbing their privacy.

This volume of wood occupies an area of 100 square meters and seeks to maximize the utilization of space. Downstairs includes open space for relaxing, eating, and cooking and a wooden jacuzzi on the front porch. While the second floor accommodates the bedroom.

Sher Maker places stationary windows and glass doors in the front area that can be opened up to 90 degrees. When the door is opened, it will allow the cabin's interior to blend with the terrace and nature. Some side sides of the cabin are also equipped with windows as a natural light circulation directed to the upper floors.

Overall, the materials used to build this cabin are steel and wood. Such wooden boards are intended as a warm touch to balance the cold temperatures of the mountains.
