Under the Same Sun: A Reminder for All Living Things

January 12, 2024

With her identity known for its "complexity," Stephanie Deumer, a Canadian artist, created an installation titled "Under the Same Sun." This multimedia installation features reproductions of a combination of various aspects namely; biological, visual, mechanical, and social. Duemer's interest in knowledge and nature became a source of inspiration for the work she displayed. Thus, her work often reflects the surrounding environment which is realized through video and light-based mediums.

This year, Stephanie Deumer has performed an underground multimedia installation that is part of the Desert X AlUla 2022 exhibition in Saudi Arabia. Under the Same Sun, describes a work that wants to examine the network between the sun, its material reality and energy, and the resulting images and shapes. This installation stands as a greenhouse with living plants in it.

As an installation that prioritizes technology, Under the Same Sun is equipped with solar panels that can convert energy from sunlight into electrical energy. The energy generated is a resource for operating a projector that displays video with light. Furthermore, this light is also used as a source in the direction of the greenhouse, allowing the plants in it to photosynthesize and grow well. Apart from being an energy source, solar panels also serve as a roof of the space that hints at being an underground shelter.

The structure of the basement is made of stone arrangements arranged inside the gabion wire to form a strong wall structure. Complementing the function of the space, the chairs are made of steel beams, allowing visitors to sit down and explore the deep meaning of the Under the Same Sun installation. This installation provides visitors with knowledge about biological reproduction through technological and visual means.

When viewed from above or from a distance, this installation looks like a bunker or underground hiding place–or more like a cave in the desert. However, the visuals and experiences offered are much more meaningful when moving closer. That all living things are under the same heavens, with the sun as the source of energy and one of the sources of life.
