The New Bob Dylan Center Focuses on The Notion of ‘Master of Change’

After winning an international design competition with the idea of a 'Master of Change', architecture firm Olson Kundig is proud to present the new Bob Dylan Center in Tulsa, Oklahoma, as a transformational portrait of the artist's life story and career.

During his 60-year career, Dylan has demonstrated productivity and cultural significance to all corners of the world. According to Alan Maskin, Head of Design at Olson Kundig, Dylan's creative journey embodies continuous change. Therefore, the new Bob Dylan Center design by Olson Kundig represents an architectural approach that is not only a building but also an exhibition and installation design that will continue to be sustainable.

The center of Dylan's work envisions a dynamic and diverse place, as well as a permanent and temporary residence that can accommodate exhibitions that are easily accessible to artists, historians, musicologists, and the general public. Alan Maskin said that more than 100,000 items of Dylan's collection are on display for the general public at the new Bob Dylan Center. All collections included in The Bob Dylan Archive include handwritten manuscripts, notebooks and correspondence, films, videos, artwork, memorabilia, and original studio recordings.

"Olson Kundig is thrilled to lead an outstanding design team within the Bob Dylan Center, the new home for the Bob Dylan Archives," said Alan Maskin, sharing his design principles at the opening ceremony of the new Bob Dylan Center a few months ago.

"The Bob Dylan Center will include an immersive exhibition experience with rarely seen artifacts depicting the creative trajectory of one of the world's greatest and most prolific artists."

Even Olson Kundig also described Dylan's figure on the exterior of this building to give an affirmation of their design principles. Thus, the array of old brick-walled buildings could turn into a worthy archiving ground for Dylan's works. However, one thing to note the permanent repository of The Bob Dylan Archive is only open to researchers and scientists who meet established conditions. Beyond that, linear galleries and interactive performances featuring nearly 100 collectible items can explore by visitors.
