A Wooden "Giant Clock" Stands on the Vallee de Joux

January 12, 2024

Located in the Vallee de Joux, Switzerland, a temporary installation looks like a clock when viewed from a bird's eye perspective. It should be noted that Vallee de Joux is an area in Switzerland famous for manufacturing the highest quality watch products in the world.

This installation is known as the "Ephemeral Ring," which was designed by designer Fabien Roy to enliven the bicycle race event, the Tour de France, which took place from July 8 - July 9, 2022. Apart from being the competition leader, the Ephemeral Ring installation was built to promote the cultural, natural, and industrial heritage of the area known as the 'Watch Valley' in Switzerland during the Tour de France event.

The ephemeral rings designed to look like clocks are deliberately similarly designed to mark the clockmaking heritage of the Vallee de Joux valley, Switzerland. The Ephemeral Ring installation is made from pieces of spruce wood with a height of four meters and a diameter of 50 meters. To duplicate the classic clock form, Fabien Roy laid two lines intended as rotating clockwork in the central part of the installation.

Fabien Roy used spruce wood material in the construction of this installation because its strong nature does not collapse easily even though it is hit by strong winds so it is suitable for use as the main material in the construction of installations in the Vallee de Joux area, which is indeed open to natural landscapes.

Visitors who are watching the bicycle race can also walk around the installation area through the paths that have been provided. The trail leads to an exhibition of illustrations from the works of local illustrator Jaques Vallotton.

For material efficiency, Fabien Roy designed the Ephemeral Ring installation with a structure that is easy to disassemble so that after this installation is completed, it can be reused as a façade or substructure on the new building.
