Exploring a Circular & Regenerative Future in MoSA

January 12, 2024

Unlike most museums, the Museum of Space Available (MoSA) offers an experience of exploring a circular and regenerative future, especially about design. The mission aligns with its originator principle, Space Available, a creative platform and ecological design collective with an orientation toward creating a circular life.

The museum opened in Bali, Indonesia, on 30 June 2022 and is connected globally through the Web 3.0 ecosystem. Not only works from the Space Available studio are exhibited at MoSA, but there are also contributions from an international community of artists, designers, and scientists who specialize in bio-innovation, radical recycling, recycling, and future crafts. On its opening night, which was attended by more than 300 people, Space Available also launched its art project entitled ‘Plastic People.’ Through this project, Space Available will invite visitors to explore the story of synthetic plastics, including their impact on consumer culture, the planet, and human health.

In-depth, the project also highlights how design and the art industry can help create circular systems, which challenge destructive linear thinking. Even though as the opening exhibition at MoSA, various physical and digital elements in this project such as NFT, physical sculpture, installation of Space Available products, and case study exhibitions can still be enjoyed by visitors until August 26, 2022.

In another part of the two-story museum, there is also a recycling bar and recycling station offering free repair services for all Space Available products. Thus, everyone can participate in keeping these goods within a circular system. It also functions as a learning facility designed to facilitate workshops for the local community, so that a larger collective educational ethos is formed.

Meanwhile, regarding the construction of MoSA which is a renovation of an old abandoned building, Space Available collaborates with architectural firms Sidarta and Sandjaja. By both, the building was reimagined with more than 200,000 waste-plastic bottles recycled in partnership with the Indonesian circular firm, Robries.

“This design feature doubles as a solution for the plastic pollution crisis threatening Indonesia’s waterways,” explained Space Available, adapted from Designboom.

Thus, as stated by Space Available founder Daniel Mitchell, MoSA is basically different from the existing museums. From the mission, it can be seen that the MoSA prefers to archive future possibilities that can support the formation of circular life rather than romanticize the past.

“While museums around the world play a vital role in showcasing the past, we wanted to create a space that explores the future. We believe the future of design is circular and regenerative and we wanted to create an experience that archives and explores the visions and systems that could help reshape our lives going forward,” said Mitchell.
