January 12, 2024

MVRDV is an Architect Studio that designed the Rotterdam Rooftop Walk in the form of an installation pedestrian with orange color like a carpet. Rotterdam Rooftop Walk connects 2 buildings, from Rotterdam World Trade Center to The Bijenkorf City Department Store. The installation with orange color seems to lead visitors to show the way from one place to another. The pedestrian orange follows the contours of the roof at 2 points of the building that are connected. Visitors are invited to see a fantastic view of the city through the roof of the building.

Rotterdam Rooftop Walk has a length of 600 meters with an elevation following the contours of the roof of the building and the step is adjusted to the needs of the position of the roof of the building. The construction used a scaffolding system, to achieve the required elevation it can be achieved properly. In addition, the scaffolding system has the strength to support a fairly heavy load. A Landscape architect, Lola, has created green spaces on the roof of the building, one of which is to provide space for familiarization with installation and for exhibition events.

The Rotterdam Rooftop Walk, the installation decoration, exhibitions, and green spaces are designed to show visitors that the space on the roof can be used to its full potential, especially for reforestation, water storage, food, and energy production. With this breakthrough, the public can find out what opportunities can be taken on the roof of the building. MVRDV Architect sees opportunities in space utilization, especially in buildings with roofs that tend to be flat and wide.
