Three Funtional Pavilions Give New Spirit in place du Marche Square

January 12, 2024

Almost all cities in the world have squares as public space facilities and interactive places for the public. Aigle, Switzerland is no exception, it is revitalizing the city center square for a greener, environmentally friendly public space, and is expected to become a meeting center for residents.

To realize one of Aigle City's ambitions, Rotative Studio designed three beam-shaped pavilions that can be accessed from all sides of the building. Open access to these three pavilions is intended to support interaction with each other, ranging from the environment, human relations, and nature.

It is called the "Three Pavilions," because the structure consists of three main pavilions designed to be a pleasant place to help revitalize the place du Marche square, a historic square in downtown Aigle. This temporary pavilion serves as a place for meetings, learning, and brainstorming. Designed according to the ambitions of the city, Rotative Studio then applies bright colors to the pavilion to bring a cheerful and vibrant atmosphere.

Three pavilions are built using a steel structure with a Meranti plywood façade while the floor and furniture are made of larch wood. Not only wood and steel but aluminum are also used as a complement to the structure installed around the pavilion. Aluminum was chosen for its strong, durable, and even more so lightweight properties, and can protect the structure from water damage.

"This combination of steel and wood enables and ensures its durability and durability promptly," Rotative Studio said.

Rotative Studio seeks to build pavilions with different functions. First, the pavilion in blue with pink is allocated as a public library equipped with various types of books neatly stored on the shelves, perfect with tables and benches to support the functions of the library.

Furthermore, the smallest pavilion in the Place du Marche square is six meters high and features curved stairs that allow local residents to enjoy the view of the city square from the top of the pavilion. Finally, a 30-square-meter green pavilion that functions as a stage for various community events or performances. As a facility for visitors who want to join, the pavilion is equipped with several empty seats.

As a temporary building, the Three Pavilions will only stand for the next 7 years or so and later be moved to another city. This discourse became one of the things that Rotative Studio considered to use a modular system, because of its easy dismantling and reassembling nature someday. The Three Pavilions project not only concentrates on the visual shape of the pavilion and its layout but also on Aigle's efforts to revitalize the Place du Marche square.
