Interpreting Brasserie 2050 as an Environmentally Friendly Rice Barn

January 11, 2024

Utilizing waste as a resource to support activity is the main mission of the Brasserie 2050 restaurant in the Netherlands. In addition to campaigning for eco-friendly public buildings, the Brasserie 2050, designed by Overtreders W, is intended to participate in the Lowlands Festival in 2018.

Conceptually, this pop-up building follows the identity of Brasserie 2050, which serves a menu of 'zero waste,' foods such as bread baked from potato skins, and other menus that use leftover kitchen ingredients.

Overtreders W designed the Brasserie 2050 concerning the shape of the rice barn. According to them, rice granaries are a timeless icon of agriculture and have been used to store rice and other staple foodstuffs for centuries.

"In the future, the granary will continue to adapt to new ways of breeding and harvesting. Likewise, in the days to come, barns will continue adjusting to new breeding and harvesting methods." Added Overtreders W.

Brasserie 2050 is built using an iron structure painted white with a rectangular layout shape. W Overtreders stacked several bags of sacks on the sides of the iron structure as ballast to ensure volume stability. For the kitchen itself, there is a pantry box that uses wood as the main structure. This pantry is deliberately placed outside the building and becomes an extension of the restaurant, which also complements the granary.

The volume exposed on all sides makes this restaurant translucent from the outside. So, the room will be flooded with natural light from the sun during the day. Meanwhile, the pink glowing LED light will light up as artificial light when it gets dark. The colors emitted from the side of the walls of the Brasserie 2050 will make this restaurant contrasting but able to complement the design.

Meanwhile, wooden pallets are arranged at the base of Brasserie 2050, which can present the typical atmosphere of traditional agriculture. Looking at the top, the roof design with a saltbox model uses unplasticized polyvinyl chloride. Uniquely, Overtreders W provides a decorating element in the form of dried field products such as wheat, corn, onions, and garlic hung on iron poles.

Overtreders W placed several benches facing each other as a restaurant facility to accommodate the diners. This bench is made of recycled plastic and designed in such a way.

Overall, Overtreders W has designed the Brasserie 2050 with the simplicity of a rice barn formed with environmentally friendly materials.
