Bold Colors Light Up the Mo-tel House in London
London-based Office S&M has renovated the ground floor of a previously damp and worn-out-looking home into a colorful and fun home for a young family. This renovation originated from the desire of clients who craved a space with a vacation atmosphere and less boring. To realize the client's wishes, Office S&M applies a palette of cheerful colors that reflect the personality of the occupants. The renovation is described as a Mo-tel House for a pleasant escape from the hustle and bustle of the city.

The renovation includes the ground floor, stairs leading to the first floor, and bathrooms. The problem found in the renovation of the ground floor is the structural wall that divides the two spaces, causing the space to feel cramped and lacking natural light. In response to that problem, Office S&M created an open plan by removing walls and dividing the space by bright yellow horizontal columns that allowed natural light to enter the space. With the low sunlight coming in on the ground floor, Office S&M installed mirrors in several areas that were used to reflect light throughout the space.

To complement the renovation of Mo-tel House, Office S&M specially designed multi-functional furniture to meet the needs of space in a limited area. This can be seen from the blue sofa in the dining area which also functions as a reading area with a pink triangular roof that functions as a storage unit. This allows family members to find new uses for furniture.

Some other furniture is specially designed using recycled materials to reduce excessive waste. The idea is adopted from the principle of a client, Tamsin Chislett who is the co-founder of Onlan, an online platform that caters to clothing lending. The principle of borrowing and reuse was applied by Office S&M in designing a bathroom sink counter made of used milk bottles. In addition, the green terrazzo table in the kitchen is made of pieces of marble and the rest of the bricks.

"Tamsin and Max gave us a fantastic briefing and we have presented an amazing home that reflects the family personality and professional ethos with our love of imaginative color and design. Mo-tel challenged us to see reuse as a design tool for bold new ideas, and we found value and opportunity in material that should have been ignored." said office S&M.
