Kengo Kuma “Oath Hill Park” Toilet

November 16, 2021

Kengo Kuma brings back his unique work in the Shizuoka region, Japan. This is a special area that marks the home of Mount Fuji, Japan's highest peak. In the depths of Tenbou Park, at the center of the famous Kintaro Fujimi Hiking Trail, the architect designed a pavilion and restroom to complete the view of the towering Mount Fuji. This work was given the nickname "Oath Hill Park".

As one of the major hiking destinations, the hiking facility in Shizuoka is equipped with its hot springs, waterfalls, and forested foothills surrounding the mountain. Supported by the natural beauty around it, Kengo Kuma's design team introduced their work in the form of public toilets and rest spots for hikers and people who camped around.

The unique shape of the rest areas resonates harmoniously against the backdrop of the towering profile of Mount Fuji. Deep in the heart of “Tenbou Park”, in the middle of the famous Kintaro Fujimi hiking trail, this project is built in harmony with its surroundings. It is defined by its humble roof structure, suggesting the shape of a tiny mountain range.

Covered in a translucent white skin, the whole design recalls a snow-capped beak by day and a glowing beacon at night. The materials used on the roof call for a wooden structure that spreads out to form an umbrella, conveying inspiration from Mount Fuji's parabolic shape. The beams and columns are held together by a central steel ring, and the two "umbrellas" are connected to form a strong frame structure.

In the design of Oath Hill Park's Toilet, the materials that Kengo and his team choose to play different roles. Wood provides flexibility, steel echoes rigidity, and roofing membranes let light in and provide user-friendly warmth. To make this material more weather-resistant, the membrane is also coated with a fluorinated layer. Overall, the project has minimal impact on the landscape but still offers shade and services to fuji mountaineers.
