Building New Strengths After the Shaky Past Incident is the Vision of Alberto Kalach's Zapata School
Many schools collapsed due to the earthquake that rocked Mexico in 2017, prompting Alberto Kalach to design a structure that is stronger and more resistant to similar events in the future.
Zapata School designed by Alberto Kalach is a form of new spirit after the earthquake that rocked Mexico in 2017.
The initiating project is Zapata School, which implies building a new spirit in a location in Jojutla, Oaxaca, Mexico, where previously there were two isolated school blocks. By Kalach, the two were then merged and thus allowed to be reopened. Furthermore, because Kalach positioned its design as a solid building, a two-way arch structure was chosen as the solution. To make it more rigid and dense, the structure will also be equipped with bare slabs.
A structure of arches in two directions and bare slabs are the solution for the construction of Zapata School.
The combination of concrete and wood materials to support the concept of durability and practicality of Zapata School's design.
The concept of durability and practicality then influenced the choice of concrete as the main material. Each decision in the concept also allows the creation of spaces for user transit, air circulation, and other versatile purposes. In the Zapata School master plan there are at least thirteen classrooms, one canteen, and an office area, which is accompanied by a central courtyard. By being in the central courtyard, users can feel a contemplative experience due to the silence and the sensation of shadows around it.

Zapata School's central courtyard is the perfect place to experience contemplation.
Meanwhile, to reduce the contrast of concrete with wood on doors, pergolas, and lattices, high ceilings are the key. This combination is also supported by a helical vertical circulation that can create a cross ventilation system. It's very good for the user and the surrounding environment.
