AM House: A Modern Tropical Concept House in the Middle of Jakarta

January 11, 2024

AM House is a residential project designed by Wiyoga Nurdiansyah, which carries the modern tropical concept in the middle of the city. The design offers a simple architectural form that combines with the space program's efficiency and the optimization of local building materials.

Located in a residential area in South Jakarta, this house has a shape influenced by the surrounding environment. The part of this three-story house that best reflects the surrounding context is its sloping roof. This roof rests on a pile of slender boxes that translate the shape of the house as a whole. This simple design is then enriched with a deflected back end of the house so that the impression displayed becomes more dynamic. A horizontal shift is also carried out at each mass level to create shade in the spaces below.

Wiyoga revealed that his client is a family who likes to do activities indoors and outdoors. Therefore, the AM House space program must be efficient in providing open space on each floor without disturbing the comfort of residents' privacy. The house's ground floor, which has plenty of outdoor access, functions as a service area and car garage. Meanwhile, the main rooms, such as the living room, dining room, and pantry, are located on the house's second floor.

The second floor is the house's main area with direct access from the front yard in the form of a ramp that presents comfort and a unique space experience. On the second floor, there is also a special room to show off the client's collection of cars. The space has a hydraulic lift directly connected to the garage below. To complete the program, spaces such as the terrace, guest bedroom, and work room were added to the second floor.

Going up to the top floor, the spaces in this area are all more private. The third floor consists of one master bedroom and two child bedrooms, with each room having access to the balcony.

Finally, one of the applications of the concept of a modern tropical house in the design of AM House is the use of local materials. The dominant material used by Wiyoga for this house is wood textured concrete. This material was chosen to produce harmony with terrace-like spaces that use ironwood for the floor and ceiling.

In addition, a perforated iron plate is also used on the house's front façade to give it a light touch but still support the privacy of the spaces behind it. Not to forget, adding skylights in several spaces and circulation areas acts as natural lighting that saves energy. Garden openings also support this environmentally friendly design to facilitate air circulation.
