The New Look of Kresta Design's Renovation of an 18th Century Apartment in Madrid
Located in the historic centre of Madrid, Spain, Kresta Design reimagined an apartment that dates back to the late 18th century for the CASAMILC project while maintaining its original identity and introducing new elements. The renovation was designed to retain the city's architectural essence of brick load-bearing walls, timber-framed interiors and facades adorned with plaster, brick and granite finishes. The centrepiece of CASAMILC is an expansive library that connects the spaces and guides the transition between the private areas facing the courtyard and the public zones orientated towards the street.

CASAMILC aimed to maintain a sensitive dialogue with its historic structure and the intervention of the team at Kresta Design, prioritised respecting the original framework of the building while offering an unprecedented new spatial experience. The bookcase in the centre serves as a transitional area where lined with book-filled walls it also creates a visual connection to the other rooms as well as being able to frame the view of the nearby square. This focus on spatial flow ensures a balance between private and public areas.

The core of the renovation materials used was to bridge the gap between classic and contemporary styles as can be seen from the use of classic wooden flooring and traditional wooden joinery alongside patterns, textures, curved transitions, and folded shapes that are unusual at this time. The use of Portuguese pink marble, metal accents and bold colours complete the look in the kitchen and bathrooms, introducing an exciting combination of sophistication and dynamism.

The apartment is a reflection of the classic Madrid residential archetype, featuring a five-storey building with a regular facade. The building embodies a traditional urban structure with rhythmic compositions on the façade interspersed with wrought iron, glass and wood windows. In this apartment renovation project, Kresta Design further opened up and enriched the timeless quality of the space through Memphis-inspired design touches that preserve its history while refreshing the look at the same time.
