At the Chinese Art Festival: MAD Architects' Installation Brings Nostalgia to Childhood
MAD Architects' installation The Never Hut was introduced for the first time at the 2024 Guangdong Nanhai Land Art Festival in Yanqiao Village, China. It is conceptualised as a celebration of childhood wonder and community connection by reimagining a historic playground as a vibrant gathering space. Ma Yansong, founder of MAD Architects, believes that this project is about capturing the freedom and wonder of childhood while providing a space for people to socialise, gather, reflect and imagine what the future holds.

It builds on MAD Architects' previous works in Nanhai District, including Timeless Beacon at Taiping Market. The architecture studio is committed to blending art, architecture and local heritage. Distinctively shaped like a flying saucer hovering above three tentacle-shaped supports made from discarded fishing nets, gently swaying in the breeze, the installation creates a kinetic interaction with the natural and cultural surroundings.

Inspired by the Qing Dynasty-era architecture of Yanqiao, the winding river system and the towering banyan tree at its entrance. The installation by MAD Architects is located within a 600-year-old village steeped in history. It was once the site of a primary school playground. This area of the site holds deep meaning for the local community. By transforming this space that is cherished for its historical background, MAD Architects pays homage to shared childhood memories while offering a vibrant stage area for interaction and experience. The installation features a bold and colourful canopy contrasting with the more muted tones of the village environment, providing a shaded circular sanctuary to rest, reflect and connect. The Never Hut is open to the public as part of the Guangdong Nanhai Land Art Festival 2024, welcoming both villagers and visitors from further afield.
