Gimgeosil Studio Implements Cork into M+MS Bar Design Elements
January 5, 2024

A 60-square-meter bar in South Korea inspired by the cork used to seal wine bottles or whiskey. Cork is quite effective as a bottle cap because it is waterproof and can prevent oxidation. Therefore, in this M+MS Bar design, Gimgeosil Studio uses cork in several elements, such as furniture and door handles, as a design identity.

When visitors enter this bar area, visitors are greeted with an L-shaped bar table and many chairs lined up. Behind the desk is a cabinet to prepare dishes and shelves displaying various drink bottles. A burgundy color dominates the design of the bar, with a combination of dark brown and gray. This color palette perfectly describes what they offer visitors, enjoying wine or whiskey. This allows guests to have a hands-on visual experience beyond just tasting it.

By applying a dark color palette to the room, additional lighting is needed to add to the impression of the space. A warm white LED light is added to the edge of the ceiling. In addition, on the back of the bottle storage rack, a lamp with white light is also added. The dim lighting gives a calm and comfortable impression to this room.

The design element that uses cork is a door handle in the form of two boxes that become one with a dark color. Since the cork is refractory, the cork does not burn but only changes color to a darker one. In addition, Studio Gimgeosil also adjusts the chair using cork to suit the room's atmosphere. However, some challenges exist, such as the durability of cork powder and the need for more rigidity to withstand more loads. The type of chair used is a stool with a backrest with footrests.

A total of four sets of tables with two chairs can be used by visitors who want to avoid enjoying a drink while sitting at the bar. In addition, the layout of the M+MS Bar's design is simple yet functional. Therefore, besides serving drinks, this bar also provides an interesting experience for every visitor.
