100 Architects Designed Magma Flows and Volcanic Eruptions in a Public Space

A new public space in the port city of Ningbo shows its character with vibrant colors that will catch the attention of anyone walking around it. 100 Architects has succeeded in reviving pedestrian access that connects commercial and residential areas in Zhejiang province, China. Magma Flow Public Space comes full of confidence.

100 Architects Creates Magma Flow Public Space 

Previously, this place was unused land that was only passed by people as access to commercial areas or housing. Sections of this intersection include a simple staircase as the main access. However, 100 Architects turned it into a public space that's used for relaxing, gathering, playing, and even other social activities. Now, this place has become a bustling public space that attracts attention.

In Magma Flow Public Space, there is a large staircase that serves as pedestrian access to the second floor, where an open commercial street is located. 100 Architects likened this public space to a volcano spewing magma from its belly. Thus, this large staircase looks like a volcano that accommodates public activities by placing several amphitheaters on different levels. In addition, the team also provided a ladder with a platform that was used to hang out and rest. As a complement to the concept of an erupting volcano, shade structures were placed in several parts to mimic the process of a violent eruption.

The flowing lava stains are represented by a fiery red color with the gradations of orange and yellow descending the hill. To continue the narrative of the volcano erupting in the rest of the space, the large stains of magma are designed to flatten the ground surface with fun colors and functions for children and adults who accidentally pass by or are on-site doing activities. With the contrast of vivid colors, this magma flow creates an intense sequence of events and spaces on each side.

Overall, this public space creates creativity and activity through the facilities provided such as large stairs, canopies, mahjong, tic-tac-toe tables, lounge areas, play areas, hills and mounds, and circuits. Magma Flow Public Space accommodates children's fun and entertainment for adults. So, the existence of this public space acts as an attraction for people to visit this area and an entertainment hotspot in new commercial and residential developments.
