The Arc Qinchang Village Town Hall by Studio 10

Qinchang Village Town Hall is located in Xiuwu County, Jiaozou, Henan Province. The town hall accommodates various community service programs, introduction to local small businesses, cultural and recreational programs, including a shop selling local agricultural products and handicraft souvenirs, a ceremony hall, a small cafe, gallery, and children's library.

The layout on the east side of the building has adopted a configuration strategy centered on the western courtyard style. When entering this site, visitors can feel the closeness to the world. The arches on the sides of the building also increase the tranquility of visitors.

Three main components complete this City Hall; the east side, west side, and the central courtyard. The central courtyard which is naturally formed by the two individual buildings is a building concept in the style of a western monastery. This multi-functional open space also provides a place for villagers of all ages to engage in social, recreational, or sporting activities.

In the southeast corner of the building, there is a restaurant that caters to villagers and tourists with a large enough room capacity to accommodate many visitors. This restaurant is usually used to host large-scale events such as traditional weddings and birthday parties.

Then, in the two-story building on the east side, there is a small gallery that opens to the side of the road and courtyard. There is also a library and reading room, as well as a cafe that tourists or villagers can use to relax.

To the north is a bar-shaped building consisting of a shop used for exhibitions of local agricultural produce and souvenirs made by villagers. While just south of the building overlooking the courtyard, the facade is curved and covered and equipped with benches that can serve as a seating area for watching basketball games—a sport that Xiuwu youths love.

Overall, the Qinchang Town Hall building uses geometric concepts and arch motifs—which are typical components of local traditional semi-underground dwellings. Based on the geometric prototypes and modules previously installed on the west side, the arch has been further abstracted and evolved to form a dome, catering to the various spatial and programmatic needs of the City Hall.
