New Comédie de Genève Théâtre by FRES Architectes

November 4, 2021

Even though it's called The New Comédie Theatre, this building is more than just an ordinary theatre. Not only does it serve as a venue for theatrical and musical performances, but this building also functions as a recreation area, complete with a large construction workshop. The performance area itself consists of two large hall rooms. All the activities that can be done in one building make New Comedie a real center of artistic creation, uniting all theater professions under one roof.

The New Comedie features a “show factory” character that largely determines the design of the project. This design is a hyper-functional piece of equipment that remains a unique building with its own identity at the same time. With all the supporting space for existing activities, this building still has its main function as a theater performance area.

The project's performance space is placed at the heart of the volume, with program articulations resulting in a unique cross-section. From there the distinctive identity of the building can be formed. Circulation, public and private spaces are located on the facades surrounding the programs they access. Where classical theaters distinguish the stage tower as the central element of the building's composition, the characteristic crenelated profile of the project expresses the multiplicity of activities taking place in the new theatre.

The spacious and transparent lobby area creates a harmonious relationship between the inside and the outside. Shows the relationship between theater and the city. There is a pedestrian portico that gives access to the two halls and creates another connection between the two public spaces surrounding the building.

The architectural style that appears discreet and neutral during the day expresses the character of the place of creation and production. While at night the building will be decorated with light performances that change the atmosphere of the building into a venue for performances. It emphasizes its presence in the middle of the city, as well as invites the public to feel the magic of the theatrical performance itself.

The two halls in this building were built to complement each other. Both come with their own style and identity, both in terms of architecture and scenography. The larger hall echoes the continuity of European theater with a predominance of Italian style. The envelope is made of folded, faceted leather, like origami, which holds all the acoustic and light fixtures specific to a theater hall.

The smaller hall is shaped like a modular black box dedicated to experimentation. With its simple volume form and neutral architectural style, the hall is equipped with a modular bench system that allows it to be transformed into several different configurations. The walls are covered with reinforced concrete with special patterns to ensure the acoustic quality inside.
