Hanging Facade of an Art Building in Shanghai that Seems to be "Alive"

January 5, 2024

Fosun Art Foundation is an art building located in Bund Finance Centre, Shanghai, China. With an area of about 4,000 square meters, the building was designed by Foster + Partners and Heatherwick Studio creative director Thomas Heatherwick. Fosun Art Foundation showcases contemporary and interactive works on an international scale. This art gallery was built to promote and provide a venue for various art exhibitions, fashion shows, cultural performances, and inter-company meetings. The design of Fosun Art Foundation is influenced by the materials and historical buildings in the Bund. Thomas Heatherwick said the concept was inspired by China's ambition not to duplicate what exists around the world, but to find new ways to connect with China's phenomenal architectural and landscape heritage.

This arts and culture development center features a unique facade and creates an interesting backdrop to city life. When viewed from a distance, the façade looks like a curtain on a typical Chinese theater stage, but when viewed up close resembles the shape of a giant bamboo piece hung. The unique style on the facade of the building is composed of 675 tassels made of magnesium alloy with a length of 2-16meter. These tassels are arranged on three paths that can rotate independently with the impression of overlap, resulting in an amazing visual effect and producing varying light openings in the building.

The building has seven floors. The first floor has a lobby, atrium, and cafe. The second floor is dedicated to a large hall and balcony with views of the modern Pudong district of Shanghai. Going up to the next floor there is a large exhibition hall. The three floors underground accommodate the auditorium.

Thomas Heatherwick described the Fosun Art Foundation as “a kind of jewel that would be discovered as you come through a different space.”
