A Series of Public Spaces at the East River Waterfront by SHoP Architects
SHoP Architects, a New York-based architectural firm, has been entrusted since 2004 to design a series of projects to revitalize Lower Manhattan's long-neglected riverfront. Throughout its work, SHoP collaborates closely with various community groups, stakeholders, and government agencies to produce the new civic amenities that residents can accept and enjoy.

The project includes the area along the East River Waterfront overlooking Brooklyn. The design is divided into several points with new facilities such as park, recreation pier, environmental services such as play areas and dog tracks, bicycle paths, as well as special retail buildings, places for food and entertainment.

Pier 15 is the center of activity for visitors and local residents with a two-story recreational pier. The lower level is designed as a cafe, maritime education center, promenade and lookout overlooking the water. Meanwhile, open space is elevated on the second level, restoring waterfront views that have not been seen for generations.

Moving slightly east, there is Pier 17 as a major addition to the local district. Here, SHoP developed a special system of monumental glass panels that are placed in a raised position and slid down to protect the interior space in the event of strong winds. The ground-level walkway provides a clear view of the Brooklyn Bridge. While on the rooftop, Pier 17 offers a variety of activities, from quiet contemplation to active recreation and large-scale performances.

At the north end, SHoP worked with Ken Smith Workshop to transform Pier 35 into an eco-friendly park with metal screens and a rocky beach. The creation of this beach is a restoration project consisting of precast concrete and rock gardens to imitate the characteristics of the coastline and will become a habitat for shellfish.

This riverfront project revitalized two miles of previously neglected and abandoned city property, giving new proper public spaces for the local community.
