Striking Baltimore Bend Playground on Former Narrow Grounds

Arttenders and Studio Spass have created a public space park as a new landmark on abandoned land in the Almere Buiten area of the Netherlands. A playground known as Baltimore Bend Playground looks iconic through a striking blue color that attracts the attention of anyone walking around it.

Previously, this place was unused land that was only mandated for a small park on the side of the highway. However, due to its strategic location, while the small park seems shabby, Arttenders and Studio Spass turned it into a public space that facilitates people to relax, gather, and play. Now, this place has become a crowded and eye-catching public space.

The architects designed the Baltimore Bend Playground with an arched landscape with several holes in its steel construction. The holes in this construction are deliberately made to build several steps that can be played by children and a place to relax while looking at the bustling surroundings. Its abstract and innovative design allows children to imagine indefinitely.

The 35-meter-long playground is also equipped with several small mounds built using mild steel for children's play. This mound invites children to play with small-scale slides and short tunnels that can be passed by crawling.

To limit the playground with a green park and a road next to it, Arttenders and Studio Spass applied a fiery red color to the ground surface that contrasted with the blue in the Baltimore Bend Playground pavilion. With this difference in flaming colors, the architects have created an intense chain of events and spaces on each side.

This public space ultimately succeeds in creating an iconic public space and triggering one's creativity and activity through the facilities provided. In addition, Baltimore Bend Playground accommodates children's fun and entertainment for adults. Thus, abandoned land in the Almere Buiten area can be well reconstructed.
